I’m taken from a mine and shut up in a wooden case, and I’m never let out, yet almost everybody uses me. What am I?

Pencil lead has never been lead. It’s graphite, and the pencil industry at Keswick grew out of an unusually pure deposit found in Borrowdale, Cumbria, in the 1500s.
