With a single blue hat, its wearer sees two white hats and speaks at once. With two, each blue wearer sees a blue hat, waits, and when nobody speaks works out his own must be blue, so they speak soon. Only three blue hats keep them all quiet that long. The silence is the clue.
A king puts a hat on each of his three wise men, white or blue, and tells them at least one hat is blue. Each can see the others’ hats but not his own, and they’re all perfectly logical. After a long silence, one of them says the colour of his own hat, and he’s right. How many of the hats are blue?
